Multiplayer issues

What is required to play online?
Before playing online make sure to:

  • Connect your PC or console to the Internet (we know, duh)

  • Update your game to the latest available version

  • Add the friend(s) you want to play with to your online platform; PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, or the Epic Games Store

Q: I get the message “Connection Failed (GS3-NF-40)” when trying to play online.
What do I do?

A: If you cannot connect to your friend(s) when trying to play online it is likely that one of you is encountering NAT issues.

To ensure a connection can be established, you and your friend(s) might have to change some of your NAT settings.

Please follow the links below based on the platform you are using:

[NAT settings PS5]

[NAT settings Xbox series X/S]

[NAT settings PC]

We advise that all players experiencing the “GS3-NF-40” issue take the aforementioned steps, but it is especially important that the “Host” or “Party Leader” take these steps even though she/he will not get a “Connection Failed” popup.

In addition to making sure that your NAT settings are configured correctly, you might also have to forward a select number of ports on your network router(s). The process of forwarding ports is different for each router manufacturer.

Here is a general guide on port forwarding:

The ports that you need to forward for Goat Simulator 3 to work correctly are:
TCP: 8571
UDP: 8571

Q: We have problems playing online with our PS5, how to fix it?

A: Please make sure you and your friend(s) have the latest version of the game. If it still doesn't work, check your NAT settings as mentioned in the Q/A above ☝️

Q: We can't play together in multiplayer – we get “Error code 17”?!

A: "Error code 17" means that you and your friend(s) don't have the same version of the game when trying to play together. Make sure all players update the game to the latest version.

Q: Why can't we see each other in the Goat Simulator 3 Friends menu?

  • All players need to own the game to be able to see each other in the Friends menu of Goat Simulator 3

  • Make sure you have added each other as friends on the chosen platform you're playing on before starting the game. Remember: GS3 does not support cross-play

  • If you just added each other as friends and still can’t find each other; try refreshing the friend page or restarting the game

  • Make sure all players update the game to the latest version

Players on Steam can play with players on the Epic Games Store, this is how:

Steam-user:

Step 9: Invite the friends you want to play with to a party

Step 10: Press “New Game” or continue to start playing together!

A note on save files (Steam + Epic)

Save files are stored on your PC whenever you play Goat Simulator 3 via the Epic Games Store or on Steam. The save file location is shared between these two versions. Because save files are shared between the two versions of the game you do not need to move any save files if you change which version you are playing on. You should just be able to pick up where you left off.
However; We recommend that users stick to one version of the game on a given device and do not move back and forth between the two too much. Both the Epic Games Store and Steam support syncing save files via their “cloud save” functionality and so the interplay between these systems can lead to the loss of game progress – If you move back and forth a lot between the two versions of the game.
